Online casino advertising banned from parts of Canada
21 Dec 2006
The online casino industry in Canada is facing further restrictions after the latest Canadian Consumer Protection Bill prohibiting advertisement that originates from, or is targeted at, Ontario residents. Following their American neighbours in spirit, Canadian provincial regulators have passed a law banning all forms of advertisements for online casino sites in the region of Ontario, a bill that extends even to such private undertakings as a local blog recommending online casino sites. As harsh as this is for any online casino doing business, and providing entertainment for Ontario residents, the final draft of the Consumer Protection Bill is much less aggressive than it was intended to be. In its first version, the draft was supposed to make all kinds of online casino advertisement in the whole of Canada illegal, even such seemingly innocent services as providing a link to an online casino on one's website. In the process of the passing of the bill, slowly but steadily the more extreme measures suggested were filtered out.
What is left is a bill that still prohibits online casino advertisement in principle, but has narrowed the applicability of said advertising activities somewhat. For example, links that are generated through the search at an internet search engine like google, or yahoo, are not considered online casino advertising. What will happen though is that many forms of online casino promotion by radio or in sports newspapers will disappear. That means that quite a chunk of income for these stations and newspapers are going down the drain, and Ontario based online casino gamblers will have to do all the work of finding the right casino for their needs by themselves.
